MIND – Mental Preparation

Prepare the mind – why?

  • To increase confidence.
  • Deepen bonding between mother, father and baby.
  • Remove fear of the birth process.

“The Jeyarani Way” Gentle Birth Method believes that the key areas for the mental preparation of the mother (and father) are: Removal of Fear, Knowledge and Confidence Building.

Removal of Fear

  • There can be many reasons for fear of labour including:
  • Fear of experiencing great pain during labour.
  • Fear of possible trauma that might occur to her body or to the baby’s head.
  • Fear of being “out of control”
  • The mother may also have subconscious fears.

One of the problems of fear is that it can overwhelm people.  When giving birth if the mother loses control it can force others to take control and intervene in various ways.  By removing the fears of the mother it means that she can keep control of her own birthing process.

We aim to overwrite the mother’s conscious and subconscious fears with techniques and a positive approach that the birth process can be manageable.

Kowledge

Knowledge is power.  If the mother knows and understands the processes (mind and body) that she is going through the better she will be prepared and ready for it.  It will also enable the mother to take responsibility for her pregnancy and birth.

The aim is to teach the mother, in a simple way, about what is (and will be) happening to her and her baby’s body’s throughout pregnancy and labour and why these changes happen.  It is also explained how birthing is a co-operative effort by both mother and baby and how by working together they can achieve a positive birth.

Confidence Building

  • Reduces the pain experienced during labour
  • Increases the emotional capacity of the mother and father during labour; they are confident that they can cope.
  • Means that the mother is in a better position to help the process, rather than be passive, or even at worst, “get in the way” of the natural process of birth.

We also believe in:

Nurturing the Mother: We understand that becoming a mother, whether it’s for the 1st or 10th time, is a special thing.  A mother can feel vulnerable during this time and we support them.

Looking at lifestyle modification: Stress of any kind – work, family, friends, etc, can contribute to physical inflammation and pelvic tightness.  Moreover, some mothers, at some level, resent the impact that the baby is going to have on their lives (e.g. in terms of the effect on money, career, travel, relationships, etc).  We work to induce a feeling of importance of the mother’s new role -  from SUPERWOMAN to SUPERMUM!!!!

Providing a Reality Check: The mother and father are taught to acknowledge the fact that the pregnancy is happening, that they will be giving birth and that they will be parents. By going through pregnancy and the birth process when in self-hypnosis it brings this reality closer in a non-threatening, friendly and manageable way.
