I’m really scared about giving birth and don’t know if I can cope with the pain.  Help!

It is natural for most mothers to have some fear and apprehension.  I recommend that you listen to my audio-tape: The Jeyarani Way. Prepare for a natural birth with Self-hypnosis and Visualisation by Dr Gowri Motha. Try to listen to it on a daily basis and evaluate how you feel after 2 weeks. If you need further help please see a hypnotherapist for one to one counselling and therapy.

I am afraid that I will not be able to cope with the pain of natural birth.

Please don’t worry.  If you learn how to use self-hypnosis for birth you might surprise yourself how easily you will dilate to full dilation and how well you have done.  Try to go to the classes as early as possible in your pregnancy and listen to my audio-tape.  Follow the advice I have given to the question above.

However, if you have a lot of apprehension remember that there are medical methods of pain management of the contractions.  One option is an epidural – that offers you intermittent pain relief that you can have topped up according to your needs.  When you are ready to deliver your baby you can reduce the anaesthetic dose so that you can actually feel the sensation of your baby being born as you push your baby out of your body.  In lots of cases just knowing that an epidural is always available can give you the courage to try on your own.

Remember, the whole aim of 'The Jeyarani Way' Gentle Birth Method programme is to help you to have the best birth that you can.  So if you follow the programme you are working towards getting birthfit and ready – both mentally and physically for the birth.

There are many mental barriers that during the birth process can produce pain:

- Fear

- Apprehension

-  Worries about what is going on around you

- Memories e.g. previous birth experiences

Jeyarani Remedy: Self-hypnosis and Visualisation classes and audio-tapes.  These teach the mother how to use self-hypnosis, together with coping and distraction techniques to manage the birth process.  Moreover, the labour visualisations mean that by the time of the actual delivery the mother will already have given birth many times (in her head) already, so will be better prepared for what happens.

The four physical barriers during the birth, which can produce pain:

  • Pelvic inlet – Engagement of the head.  A tight fit can cause pressure and pain at the pelvic inlet. Jeyarani Remedy: to encourage early engagement so that discomfort from this cause is not expected during labour.
  • Midcavity – Descent of the foetal head during labour can put pressure on the pelvic tissues, which if oedematous (contain excess fluid) can be very painful. Jeyarani Remedy: pelvic drainage using Reflexology, Creative Healing, yoga and exercise.
  • Pelvic floor – as the cervix dilates excessive pelvic fluid can cause a painful dilatation of the cervix as the paracervical nerve (the nerve around the cervix) gets pressed by both the baby’s head and by the oedematous tissues. Jeyarani Remedy: correct diet, yoga, and exercise.
  • Perineum – the last barrier of pain – the perineal muscles and skin. Jeyarani Remedy: Jeyarani pelvic oils and vaginal stretching using the correct technique and the breath.

During labour there are other techniques that can help e.g. even a hot shower aimed around your hips, sacrum and pelvis and lower abdomen can given immense pain relief and can be used at all stages of labour.  Our book “Gentle Birth Method” gives lots of tips to help.
